Self-Care & Tech Can Coexist
For people of all ages, from millennials to baby boomers, self-care is a hot topic of conversation.
Browse any number of studies, magazine articles and online lists, and you’ll find tips for improving self-care. Often these strategies focus on unplugging from technology to boost health and wellness. But technology and self-care are not mutually exclusive. In fact, there’s a growing trend toward consumers using apps to reach their physical and mental health goals.
Health tech is growing
According to data from Sensor Tower, a mobile app research company, self-care and wellness apps are showing significant growth. In Q1 of 2018, the company reports, the top 10 grossing wellness apps made about 170% more revenue worldwide than the top 10 wellness apps earned in Q1 2017, across iOS and Android. In the United States, this increase from 2017 to 2018 was around 167%.
The top two apps from this list, Calm and Headspace, both focus on mindfulness meditation and claim a large share of the total revenue. Apple, quoted in TechCrunch, said self-care was one of its top four breakout trends for 2017.
But consumers aren’t just turning to apps for guided meditations. The popularity of general health and fitness apps has also increased. In 2014, a Flurry Analytics study examined data from more than 6,800 health and fitness apps, finding that usage had risen 62% in the previous six months – especially among women ages 25 to 54 – contrasted with 33% growth for the overall market.
It’s time for a new kind of wellness app
Consumers have shown that they are willing to invest in their health and well-being. Millennials are leading this movement, according to the Pew Research Center, spending twice as much as baby boomers on self-care products and services, including apps, life coaching, therapy, and workout and diet plans. But people of all ages are engaging in a more holistic approach to self-care, and they can benefit from technology that facilitates good habits.
