5 Ways to Prepare for a Media Interview

A media interview is an excellent opportunity to communicate information about your company. Keep in mind, however, that the job of the media is report news and tell a balanced story, not to promote your product, so it’s important to prepare a game plan and learn how to take control of the interview and integrate your messages in an organic way. There are five things to keep in mind when you prepare for a press interview:

1. Know Your Communications Objective.

Know in advance what you want the lead to be. Do you have a new product launching? What information about your brand would make a headline in this publication? While general information about your company is exciting to you, reporters might need some “meat” to drive an article. Offer an angle, rather than simply relaying facts about the brand. Try to foresee what might be a good story, and do your best to drive the interview there.

2. Have Your Messages at the Ready.

Remember, it’s your job to control the interview. Have your top media messages on hand and know what details you want to convey. Always answer the question you are asked, but find a bridge when possible linking back to your message points. Rehearse this, as great responses are almost always well planned.

3. Know Your Media Outlet.

Do your homework. Knowing the media outlet and specific editor you are speaking with will go a long way to completing a successful interview. Read through past articles written by the interviewee, and get a sense of their style and what they would be looking for. Know who their target is and what the outlet would like, then tailor the information you provide to the reporter’s needs.

4. Focus on Your Brand Only.

If asked, do not comment or discuss your product comparisons, market strategies or similar programming. An interview is your time to shine, so don’t pass any of the attention or ink off to someone else!

5. Stay Positive.

Resist responding to any negative questions. Address the innuendo and stay positive, omitting any negative language. Find another angle and always always always stay positive!
