Time Magazine Confirms: Facebook Page Posts Reaching Only 6 Percent of Audience

Time Magazine published an article over the weekend confirming what we wrote about a couple weeks ago on our blog: Facebook Page posts aren’t reaching the audience they once were. Unfortunately, TIME revealed that only SIX PERCENT of a Page’s audience is actually seeing the posts. That’s even lower than we thought.

A quick excerpt from the article (which you can read in full here):

“Over the past several months, Facebook has been reducing the organic reach of Pages. Even if a person Likes a company or organization on the social network, they’re unlikely to naturally see that Page’s content in their News Feed. In a recent study of more than 100 brand Pages, Ogilvy & Mather found that companies’ posts dropped from reaching 12% of their followers in October to just 6% by February. The tech blog Valleywag reports that Facebook is planning to dial reach down to 1% to 2% of followers eventually.”

What does this mean for brands? It depends who your audience is. If you’re trying to hit teens, single women, or middle-age men, your bottom line probably won’t see a huge hit if you refuse pay to play. But if your target audience is moms, you’re going to have to play ball. As study after study has shown: moms are on Facebook. Marketing budgets will have to be rearranged so there’s incremental funds to help boost relevant, timely, and important posts.
